DEPARTMENT OF INFECTIOUS DISEASES AND CLINICAL MICROBIOLOGY FACULTY OF MEDICINE ERCIYES UNIVERSITY KAYSERI, TURKEY
Erciyes University Hospital was established in 1976 with 126 beds and today has 1300-bed capacity. Hospital serves a population of approximately 5 million, with 65,000 admissions annually. There are 29 operating rooms and about 34500 operations are performed here annually. There are 212 beds across four level-III adult ICUs and 2000 patients admitted annually.
Hospital diagnostic laboratories serve for 1300 bed-university hospital. There are various techniques and automated equipment used for diagnosis of infectious diseases. The laboratories are; bacteriology, virology, serology, metabolism, immunology and haemotology. And also basic molecular microbiology is facilitated for genotypic analysis of bacteria. Always showing the highest respect to patient’s right of information performing the tests using the most accurate, the best screenable, the most reproducable methods and aiming for the minimal error. Our vision is to prove how this concept becomes true by means of internal and external quality controls.
DEPARTMENT OF INFECTIOUS DISEASES AND CLINICAL MICROBIOLOGY
The clinic has 24-bed capacity and various infectious diseases are diagnosed, followed-up and treated. There are 3 professors, 2 associated professors and 2 assistant professos. The main infectious diseases followed in the clinic are; central nervous system, respiratory system, urinary tract, skin-soft tissue, prosthesis infections, brucellosis and tularemia. There are consultative practices for patients in the hospital and outpatient setting. The aim is to identify and effectively treat infections that arise from exposure to infectious diseases, or that follow organ transplantation and other surgical procedures. Infectious Disease Polyclinic offers specialized evaluations for patients; referred to polyclinic for the evaluation and management of suspected or proven infections. It is also specialized in treating patients, who have been exposed to or diagnosed with HIV or AIDS. The clinic is one of the ESCMID collaborative center.

Epidemiology of hospital-acquired infections and infection control
Molecular analyses of multidrug resistant pathogens (gram negative pathogens, methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus, vancomycin resistant enterococcus, etc.) and identification of resistance mechanisms
Zoonotic infections (anthrax, brucellosis, tularemia, etc.)
Counter measurements of bioterrorism
Fungal pathogens in immunosuppressive patients
INFECTION CONTROL COMMITTEE
The Infection Control Committee was established in 1997 and currently employs 7 full-time equivalent trained infection control nurses. Surveillance is undertaken using internationally accepted definitions. Infection control procedures have been developed and implemented throughout the hospital including routine multimodal hand hygiene promotion campaigns for all healthcare workers. Infection control activities primarily focused on intensive care units to produce monthly healthcare associated infection rates and quarterly feedback to staff. Infection control prevention bundles were introduced in 2011 and included central line associated bloodstream infection, ventilator associated pneumonia and catheter associated urinary tract infections.
EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH AND APPLICATION CENTER
Erciyes University, Experimental Research and Application Center has been providing experimental animals, namely rats (Wistar Albino and Spraque – Dawley), mice (Babl-C), and rabbits (New Zealand), and technical assistance to researchers since 1997. Researchers, after receiving a permit from the ethical committee, could apply to our center to conduct their research. Working in close cooperation with the local ethical committee, the center offers laboratory animal certificate programs. The center also has laboratories for researchers including 2 cell and embryo , tissue culture, behavior lab (Morris water maze), invasive and noninvasive polygraphed systems, micro surgery operation room, and general surgery room. The center at present is building a biosafety lab with level 2 (BSL-2). One of the main missions of the center is to cooperate with national and international institutes for experimental research and application.
GENOME AND STEM CELL CENTER
The center is equipped with a system of intelligence building and harboring wet laboratories, dry benches and office space. For the main research facilities, the building consists of Stem Cell Unit, Gene Therapy and Blood Cordon Bank with GMP standards, Genomics, Proteomics, Molecular Microbiology, SCID and NOD Mouse facilities, Plant Biotechnology, Plant Cell Culture Laboratory, Bioinformatics, and a Molecular Diagnosis Unit. In addition to the research environments, there are four classrooms and a conference hall. In Molecular Microbiology Laboratory various molecular techniques are performed; including various PCR based assays, Pulse field gel electrophoresis, latest imaging units, automated ultra capacity centrifuges, nano drop tech, isoelectric focusing and other latest molecular equipment.
