Basic Research and Anthrax Vaccine Exploration

This is the official website of BRAVE, a research project with the aim of developing a vaccine against anthrax to help counteract the threat of bioterrorism.

The NATO supported project, led by Professor Les Baillie of the Cardiff University School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, involves scientists from the Republic of Georgia, Turkey and the USA.

Currently, the majority of the world’s population is susceptible to infection with Bacillus anthracis, the bacterium which causes anthrax, but efforts to produce a vaccine have so far been hampered by the rarity of naturally acquired human infections, the same reason that makes commercial production of a vaccine unviable.

The need to develop effective vaccines and medical countermeasures against anthrax infection was brought home by the 2001 US postal attacks which highlighted the vulnerability of civilian populations and the threat posed by terrorist use of this organism.
